Sony Vaio Duo 11 - An undeservedly maligned tablet/ultrabook hybrid
Sony has been having a tough time since home 3-D, in which it invested its soul, turned out to be (as I predicted) of little interest to consumers. This hasn’t stopped it from continuing to be as innovative and creative as ever, but, as often happens once the public smells fear, nothing it does is loved. That has certainly been the case with this item, a Windows 8 hybrid tablet/ultrabook with slide-out keyboard. I liked it as soon as I picked it up at a show, and getting my hands on it properly later was no disappointment.
However, because Sony isn’t perceived as being of the moment, the Duo hasn’t been received kindly. Unfair, I say. It’s a great 11.6in tablet with an excellent touch screen that slips in one easy motion into a powerful ultrabook with a 128Gb solid-state drive – and has a stylus, so you can write by hand. What’s not to like?
There is, it’s true, a bunfight going on between manufacturers to exploit the beauty and sophistication of Windows 8 and a lot of odd designs are being thrown up. Meanwhile, to be brutal, what people actually want is iPads and Android tablets – Windows 8 take-up has reportedly not been strong. But don’t take my word for it: try the Duo if you can find it, as it might not be around for long.

ReplyDeleteThis is the latest innovation. When using the touchscreen tablet will be. but when the screen is shifted and pulled out keyboard will be an ultrabook. 2 functions in one tool.
